The City Of Leeds is happy to announce that COLBA Academy Coach Murray Bingham has been tasked with developing a whole-club strength and conditioning offer which will add significant value to the programme.
Murray is a former City Of Leeds youth player who’s love for the sport has seen him follow his passion in both the academic and sporting domains. Through his studies at Leeds Beckett University at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, he has accrued significant experience across a number of sports including netball, rugby league, athletics and basketball to name a few, including gaining two prestigious summer internships at UCLA and North Carolina in the US.
Over the past two seasons he has worked with the City Of Leeds Basketball Academy at the pinnacle of our pathway and we now have the opportunity to roll out his services across the youth programme, offering physical development and strength & conditioning to our young people aged 12-18.
COLBC Direct Matt Newby was excited to see Murray further commit to the success of our next generation:
“Seeing another alumni commit to the programme that they have grown up within is really pleasing and Murray’s commitment to his path has seen him evolve as an excellent practitioner. He is currently working with the Women’s SBL programme at the Newcastle Eagles and having worked with our academy, he seemed the natural choice to drive a new and exciting aspect of what we do. He will be working with young people from every level of our programme on the development of physical literacy, speed, agility and quickness, and the broader theme of strength of conditioning, which is significant to the development of youth athletes. The young people of our programme will be very lucky to work under Murray’s guidance.”
Coach Bingham shared in the excitement of this new part of the pathway:
"I’m excited to launch this physical development program with the City of Leeds Basketball Club, a place that’s been so important in my own journey. Bringing this program to life here is a big step in raising the standard for youth development at the club and is a testament to their commitment to the players development. This program has the potential to be truly transformative for athletes. By focusing on core elements of physical development, it will help players elevate their performance on the court, making them faster, stronger, and more resilient. It not only prepares them to compete at higher levels but also reduces the risk of injury, giving them a solid foundation to push their limits and reach new heights.
Strength and conditioning is often overlooked in youth sports. Many young athletes don’t get access to structured physical development until later in their careers which is something I want to change. By making this program accessible, we’re giving all players the chance to build that foundation early. This program is about more than just performance. It’s also about equipping young athletes with the tools to train effectively and build a lifelong relationship with physical activity. Whether they aim for elite basketball or simply want to stay active and healthy, they’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to do so. I’m proud to be part of a club investing in its players’ holistic development and I can’t wait to see how this program develops and builds on the club’s successes."
Further details of the new Physical Development programme will be shared with members directly with a pending launch date of Monday 14th October 2024.
