Leeds Beckett University x COLBC partnership secures BUCS Championship!

Everyone at the City Of Leeds Basketball programme would like to congratulate our partners Leeds Beckett University's Men's 1st Team on winning the BUCS Tier 3 North title and securing promotion for next season.

Following a successful return to leading the Leeds Beckett University Basketball programme this season, the LBU Men's 1st Team have secured promotion to BUCS Tier 2 by securing the Tier 3 North title.

Since last summer COLBC Coaches Matt Newby, James Quinn and Alex Scott have been engaged in leading the basketball programme for the Men's 1st Team, Men's 2nd Team and Women's 1st Team. There has also been extensive opportunities for LBU students to compete at the National League level, with 10 LBU students representing COLBC in Basketball England's Men's Division 3.

Josephine Mannion, LBU Student Sport Manager was delighted that this first step in the re-growth of the programme had been secured in the first season of our partnership:

"We’re delighted that Leeds Beckett Men’s 1st team have gained BUCS promotion this year, which I think illustrates the impact the partnership with City of Leeds Basketball is already having on the University programme"

COLBC Director Matt Newby shared in the excitement following Wednesday's away win to league rivals Newcastle University:

"It's a great way to end the year and reflects the hard work and efforts of the student-athletes from Leeds Beckett University.  The league and cup competition this year proved a good testing ground for the Men's 1st team who finished with a 12-2 Record in all competitions. Having won the league and advancing to the Cup Quarter finals this season we have learned a lot about ourselves and what it will require to earn back to back promotions.
The collaboration between City of Leeds Basketball and Leeds Beckett University has seen the BUCS programme revitalised and showing a new impetus, and we are excited about what 2024-25 will bring.
I would like to thank all the players, administration and the Athletic Union for the opportunity to work in the University domain again, this year has been a lot of fun."

We are now accepting expressions of interest from prospective student-athlete basketball players ahead of the new academic year in September. Please send all enquiries to athleticunion@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.
